For some students, graduation arrives with the familiar springtime rituals: a cap and gown, a crowded auditorium and the sound of family members cheering from the stands. For 18 students in the Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified School District, the milestone came during the summer.
The Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified School District and the Board of Education recognized the students for successfully earning their high school diplomas during the summer session, celebrating a group whose paths to graduation did not necessarily follow the traditional school-year calendar.
“Graduation is always a meaningful milestone, and our summer graduates remind us that success does not always follow a traditional timeline. Each of these students has demonstrated determination, resilience and a commitment to reaching their goals. We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and grateful to the families, educators and community members who supported them along the way,” said YCJUSD Board President Cathy Bogh.
“We celebrate not only what they have achieved, but also the possibilities that lie ahead. We wish each graduate continued success as they take this next step in their journey.”
The graduates represented three high schools across the district.
At Green Valley High School, Principal Frank Tucci announced four summer graduates: Melody Hilario, Alexa Lomeli, Drake Maxwell and Juliana Rodriguez. Oak View High School graduates were Hannah Lainez and Jordan Munoz.
At Yucaipa High School, Principal Daniel Gervais recognized 12 summer graduates. “It is an honor to celebrate our graduates at Yucaipa High School,” Gervais said.
The Yucaipa graduates are Nolan Beck, Damien Cruz, Isaiah Dimas, Luis Gonzalez-Chavez, Jeremiah Gonzalez, Ryan Kilbride, Anthony McCalister-Torres, Angel Palma Rodriguez, Kevin Rodriguez-Martinez, Rudy Sanchez, Jahmil Solano and Brayden Wingler.
While not all of the graduates were able to attend the recognition ceremony due to working or attending school, their accomplishments were celebrated by the board and district nonetheless.
For the students who were recognized, the summer ceremony marked more than the completion of high school. It was a moment for the district to acknowledge the work that brought each student to the finish line — and to look ahead to whatever comes next.
