YAS Prom

Most people fondly remember their prom as a rite of passage. Some people miss the opportunity altogether. Yucaipa Adult School (YAS) held its inaugural prom on May 17 at Yucaipa Elks Lodge.

“Our theme was Midnight Elegance, and it truly was a special night for our students, many of whom had never experienced a prom before,” said YAS teacher Tracy Marrs.

Marrs values her role at the school. She was selected as YAS Teacher of the Year and recently honored at a Board of Education meeting.

Student Patricia Ortiz, from Yucaipa, helped to spearhead the prom.

"An adult prom is proof that fun doesn't have an age limit," Ortiz said. "Because some nights deserve a little extra sparkle."

Student Vania Gabon talked about bringing the Prom idea to Marrs.

"To our surprise and joy, the principal agreed. It turned out to be one of the best nights ever! Everyone had fun and the atmosphere was full of harmony."

Students at YAS are over 18, with some in the 30-60 age range, said Marrs.

“This milestone event was entirely inspired by our students and made possible through the combined efforts of both students and staff,” Marrs said. “We also partnered with Oak View High School to host a free dress and suit event in the weeks leading up to prom, helping everyone feel confident and celebrated.”

The inaugural prom featured a wide range of desserts, including mini fruit tarts; finger foods such as salami rosettes, mozzarella and basil; a lively mocktail bar; DJ; a photo booth and many happy faces.

YAS offers ESL, citizenship, math and English general prep classes and construction classes. It has high school and GED programs.
