Office 365 Tips and Info

Basic Information
  • The username and password used for Office 365 can also be used by students to log into Windows on computers on campus.
  • Current storage:  50GB for email and unlimited for OneDrive (document storage) per user
  • Student account usernames are constructed as follows:  Entire first name followed by the first letter of the last name followed by the last three digits of the student's Permanent ID number followed by "".  Therefore, a student named John Doe with the ID number of 123456789 would log in  The password is the entire Permanent ID number.  Log in at  When keying the password, do not use the numeric keypad or caps lock.  If you encounter an error screen, you will need to completely close the browser (all open windows) and start a new browser session before trying again.
  • Office 365 is currently operating in a "closed-campus mode", meaning that student email can only be sent/received to/from and addresses.  Staff accounts are not restricted and can send/receive with any addresses.
  • Office 365 for Education, as configured to sync with our local network, works with all browsers.  If you are having trouble getting past the log-in screen, try closing the browser (all windows) and open a fresh session.  If that still doesn't help, try using a different browser as your browser may either be out of date or configured in such a way that prevents a good connection.
  • If you encounter the "Lite" version of Outlook and can't even see the online applications after logging in, you need to update your browser.
  • Because Office 365 stores cookies in order to improve the user experience, (1)be sure that cookies are enabled on the browser you use to access Office 365, and (2) close all windows of the browser and open a fresh instance if you make a typo when entering your log-in credentials before trying again.  If you have repeated problems logging in, try clearing your browser's cookies and Internet history (found in the browser's settings).  Or, just try using a different browser.
  • When using Office 365 in a public setting, such as a school computer lab, be sure to completely close the browser after use.  Logging out of Office 365 does not necessarily guarantee that your are logged out, depending on the browser configuration.  Furthermore, it's wise to also log out of Windows, as well.
  • If you plan to use the option of opening the desktop Office software from your already opened Office Online document (which is possible if you have desktop Office installed on your computer), and your desktop Office is not the most current version, you should first install the Office 365 "Desktop Setup" software to make the desktop Office software and the online Office apps work best together (this will enable saving directly from Desktop Office to your OneDrive, prevent repeated requests for log-in information when opening the desktop application, and prevent inconsistency between versions).  It is a very easy and quick download/install, and basically you will need it if the computer you are using does not have the latest copy of Office installed on it (currently Office 2013):
    1. Log in to Office 365.
    2. Click the Office 365 gear icon (not the browser's gear which is the one at the top of the window) and select "Office 365 Settings".
    3. On the next page, select "Software".
    4. On the Software page, install the "Desktop Setup" option on the left.
    5. Follow the instructions on the Desktop Setup page to install the helper app.
    6. From then on, check the "Keep Me Signed In" and "Remember Me" check boxes on the initial log-in screens, and you should only have to log in once per session on that device.

      • You can additionally install the Lync desktop app from this area.  Lync works together with the Office 365 directories to provide a tool for conducting online meetings with video, audio, and shared desktops.
  • If you want the Exchange elements (Outlook, Calendar, People) on your phone or tablet, install one of the following apps from the Store:   Exchange, Outlook Web App, Office 365 for Business or Enterprise.
  • If you want the Sharepoint elements (Newsfeed, OneDrive, Sites) on your phone or tablet, install on of the following apps from the Store:  SharePoint, SkyDrive Pro, OneDrive for Business, or Office 365 for Business or Enterprise.  (SkyDrive and OneDrive without the "Pro" or "Business" are the consumer versions and won't work with our installation.)
